Journey
It’s hard to talk about Amapiano’s evolution without mentioning MDU aka TRP. Born Keith Mduduzi Mangena on 9 March 1992 in Diepkloof Zone 4, Soweto, he grew up surrounded by the township’s kwaito and house culture. As a teenager, he played in local groups before teaching himself beat-making around 2015. That self-start paved the way for the distinctive sound that would put him at the heart of South Africa’s most influential movement.
Widely credited with bringing the log drum to the fore, Mdu created a production style of lush piano chords, deep bass, and crisp percussion that reshaped Amapiano’s DNA. Apple Music describes his approach as a “futuristic spin” on the genre’s hallmark sound, while DJ Mag calls him a “key figure” in its rise. His work ranges from soulful, song-led tracks to sgija and quantum-inspired instrumentals, always marked by a minimalist, percussive drive that’s become his signature.
His discography reads like a blueprint of modern Amapiano. In 2021, he and Kabza De Small dropped the sprawling 'Pretty Girls Love Amapiano 3' double album; earlier that year, he co-led 'Tales of the 2 Peers' with Semi Tee. His own 'Two Sides of My Story' (2022) stretched to 25 tracks, while more recent titles like 'The Originator' (2024) and 'The Vault' (2025) show both vocal features and raw, club-ready instrumentals. Along the way, he’s appeared on anthems such as “Mjolo” with Bongza, Kabza, and Lawd Weezy, and “Ubumnandi” with Kabza and Nia Pearl.
Within the industry, Mdu’s peers openly acknowledge his influence. In 2023, DJ Maphorisa, Kabza De Small, and Major League DJz made headlines by publicly donating money to him as a thank-you for shaping their sound – a rare gesture underscoring his status. He has also been nominated at the South African Amapiano Awards and regularly headlines PianoHub showcases, b2b DJ sets, and international tours, keeping his productions rooted in the dance floor.
Today Mdu commands hundreds of thousands of streams across platforms and continues to expand Amapiano’s reach far beyond Soweto. Even as his profile grows, he stays prolific, teasing new music on radio shows and YouTube mixes. With a catalog that already reads like a greatest-hits reel and a style other producers call “visionary,” MDU aka TRP remains one of Amapiano’s true pioneers – and its future still pulses through his log drum.
